The Short Answer: Almost Always
Queensland has some of the strictest electrical safety laws in the country, and for good reason — electricity kills. Under the Electrical Safety Act, fixed electrical wiring work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. That covers far more than most people assume: installing or moving power points, hardwiring appliances, replacing a light switch or fitting, upgrading a switchboard, adding a circuit, installing a ceiling fan that's hardwired, and connecting hot water systems, ovens and cooktops. If it involves the fixed wiring of your home, it's electrician's work — full stop.
The list of things a homeowner can legally do is short. You can replace a plug top on a flexible lead, replace a light globe, and reset a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker. That's essentially it. Swapping a 'simple' light fitting, wiring in a new power point, or extending a circuit for a shed are all jobs that look approachable on a weekend but are illegal for an unlicensed person to perform in Queensland — and genuinely dangerous if you don't know what you're doing.
The penalties are real. Unlicensed electrical work in Queensland can attract significant fines, and the consequences don't stop there. If an unlicensed job causes a fire or an injury — even years later — your home and contents insurer can refuse the claim on the basis that the work was performed illegally. That's the part that catches people out: a $200 DIY 'saving' can turn into a six-figure uninsured loss. Insurers ask for the Certificate of Electrical Safety, and unlicensed work doesn't come with one.
There's also a difference between an 'electrician' and an 'electrical contractor', and it matters when you're hiring. An electrician holds an individual trade qualification. An electrical contractor is a licensed business permitted to offer electrical work to the public and to issue the compliance paperwork. When you pay someone to work on your Hervey Bay home, you want a licensed electrical contractor — they carry the contractor licence, the insurance, and the legal authority to certify the work.
So when should you call? Any time the job touches fixed wiring, any time you're not 100% certain it's safe, and any time you'd need a certificate for insurance, sale or compliance. Our Sparky is a licensed Queensland electrical contractor (LIC1509719), fully insured, and we supply the relevant compliance certificate for any work that requires one. If you're unsure whether your job needs an electrician, call 0473 457 641 and we'll tell you straight — no charge for a question.

What You Can Legally DIY
A very short list: replace a plug top on a flexible lead, change a light globe, and reset a tripped breaker or safety switch. Everything beyond that involving fixed wiring is licensed work in Queensland.
What Needs a Licensed Electrician
Power points, light switches and fittings, ceiling fans, switchboard upgrades, new or extended circuits, hardwired appliances, ovens, cooktops and hot water connections — all electrician's work under QLD law.
Why the Certificate Matters
Licensed work comes with a Certificate of Electrical Safety. It's your proof the work was done correctly — and what your insurer will ask for if you ever need to claim.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is it illegal to do your own electrical work in Queensland?
- For fixed wiring work, yes. Queensland law requires a licensed electrician for almost all electrical work, including power points, switches, light fittings, ceiling fans, switchboards and hardwired appliances. Homeowners can only legally replace a plug top on a lead, change a light globe, and reset a tripped breaker or safety switch.
- What happens if I get caught doing unlicensed electrical work?
- Unlicensed electrical work in Queensland can attract significant fines. More importantly, if the work later causes a fire or injury, your home and contents insurer can refuse to pay the claim because the work was illegal and uncertified. The financial risk far outweighs any DIY saving.
- Can I install my own power point or light switch?
- No. Installing or moving a power point, light switch or light fitting is fixed wiring work and must be done by a licensed electrician in Queensland. It's a common job for us and it's quick — but it's not legal to DIY.
- How do I check an electrician is actually licensed in QLD?
- Ask for their Queensland electrical contractor licence number and look it up on the Electrical Safety Office register at worksafe.qld.gov.au. It takes about 30 seconds. A licensed electrician won't be offended — they expect it.
